US HISTORY
WELCOME TO UNITED STATES HISTORY!

This year we will be studying the early history of the United States from its Pre-Columbian (pre 1492) origins to the Reconstruction (1877).  We will be conducting many simulations, activities, & projects in order to make history come alive for the students!  It is the goal of this course to achieve each of the state’s educational objectives & standards in order to prepare students for the OGT graduation test.  There is also an emphasis throughout the year on the improvement of basic skills; as well as the further development of high level cognitive, problem solving, & process skills through the lessons of the past.  Throughout the year, students will also prepare for the Washington D.C. trip.  It is hoped that this year, students will gain a greater understanding and appreciation of America’s past while furthering their sense of patriotism in the present.

MATERIALS: (WHAT YOU WILL NEED)

In an effort to achieve a high degree of organization and to create an effective learning environment, all students are required to bring the following materials to class each day.  Every student must maintain a History notebook or binder throughout the year.  The notebook or binder will contain all important course materials such as: class notes, handouts, study guides, and assignments.  Students must also bring a pen or a pencil as well as clean paper to class each day.  Finally, students must cover and bring their textbooks to class every day.  For some classes, students may be asked to bring colored pencils and other special materials to class in addition to the others noted.

ASSIGNMENT POLICY:

In accordance with Team Extreme policies, assignments are expected to be turned when they are due.  Assignments will be accepted only up to one day late for half credit.  After that time, assignments will not be accepted.  Major projects will be accepted late; however, a letter grade will be deducted for each day it is late.  Many assignments will be completed in class, while others must be completed at home.  Assignments that do not meet an acceptable level of quality must be redone.  Assignments are an extremely important aspect of the course and will make up a large portion of your grade.

US HISTORY TESTS AND QUIZZES:

Tests and quizzes will be given throughout the year usually at the end of each unit of study.  Students will be informed of upcoming tests and quizzes well in advance in order to give them ample preparation time.  Valuable review questions can be found at Gigliotti’s Home Page (www.mrgigliotti.com).  Tests and Quizzes are based on OGT standards and are conveyed in a similar format to aid in test preparation.  Short notebook and content quizzes will also be given.

GRADING POLICY:

Grades will be determined by the amount of points earned in all course work divided by the total number of possible points.  The grading scale is in accordance with Parma City Schools and is as follows:

                        98% - 100% A+    78% - 79% C+    59% - Below is failing

Reading assignments will be given each day based on the topics discussed in class. Reading comprehension exercises will also be administered throughout the year in order to improve OGT skills.  Therefore, Students are expected to cover their text and bring it to class each day without exception.

ABSENCES AND TARDIES:

Students who are absent the day an assignment is due are responsible for turning that assignment in upon their return to school.  Students who are absent the day an assignment is given will have as many days as they were absent to make up the assignment.  Students are expected to turn in long term assignments on their due date unless in the case of extreme circumstances.  Missed tests and quizzes must be made up by the student the day of their return to school.  Tests and quizzes are announced in advance, therefore students are responsible to take them if they are in school, so please be prepared if you were absent prior to test day.  Makeup tests will be offered on line as well as in class.  Students who are absent will also want to get the class notes from a friend or the web site.  Students are ultimately responsible for making up all missed work.  Students who are tardy will be asked to complete a short writing assignment.  Students with frequent tardies will be dealt with on an individual, administrative, and or house basis.

MR. GIGLIOTTI'S HOMEPAGE:

To further aid student achievement and to keep parents aware of what is going on in the classroom, a course web site has been launched.  The site is an improvement on past versions and is constantly being upgraded to serve as an even more effective classroom of the 21st century!  The web site contains many interactive features such as: access to information about coursework, downloadable notes, presentations, and handouts, a student showcase, pictures, assignment submission, a class archives for absent students, special web based assignments, a current events newsstand, and even special web casts presented by “Virtual Gigliotti”.  This interactive web site will be used throughout the year in order to enhance the course.  If you do not have a computer, this site can easily be accessed in the Shiloh Media Center, the public library, or any other computer with an Internet connection. This site can be your guide through United States History and is available to students and parents from the comfort of your own home.  Use this site to facilitate your learning and to achieve excellence in U.S. History!  The web site can be found at the following address: http://www.mrgigliotti.com

GIGLIOTTI'S SPECTACULAR CD!

US HISTORYDuring the year notes are presented to the students via multi-media spectacular.  This technology enhances the learning experience by allowing students to see and interact with customized graphics, pictures, maps, sounds, videos, and other media forms specific to the course.  Mr. Gigliotti has compiled all of these spectaculars onto one CD-Rom available for student use.  This CD now makes it possible to enjoy all of the in class spectaculars from any computer and from the comfort of your own home.  On this disk you will find all of the very same spectaculars shown in class as well as class notes and review questions for each section.  This CD can be used by students who wish to review materials and by students who may have missed class.  Students need only to see Mr. Gigliotti to sign a copy out.

CLASSROOM EXPECTATIONS:

In order to create the best possible atmosphere for learning and achieve fairness and consistency in our classroom, I have several expectations listed below:

1.  FOLLOW DIRECTIONS AND PROCEDURES:

This is my golden rule!  The class will expect you to follow directions and

procedures in order to maintain the best possible classroom.  Students are

always expected to follow directions and I will make sure that I share with you

     exactly what those directions include.

2.  BE ON TIME, ON TASK, AND RESPECTFUL:

Inappropriate language, actions, and comments deter from the positive

atmosphere within the classroom.  Off the wall remarks and other

comments and actions intended to disturb the learning environment are not

permitted.  Arriving to class tardy is also considered a disruption.  Quality

successful students act appropriately at all times.  When in class, students

may not engage in non-Social Studies activities as they deter from the

     learning environment.

3.  EXPECT YOUR BEST:

Students are expected to put forth their best effort at all times.  Assignments

and activities should be completed to the best of their abilities.  Students may

be asked to redo work that does not represent their best effort in order to

     ensure personal academic quality.

***  HOUSE AND SCHOOL RULES ALSO APPLY AT ALL TIMES

US HISTORY
REWARDS:

I expect the best from my students and I reward them for their efforts.  Students may receive various awards throughout the school year!

CONSEQUENCES:

Unfortunately on occasion students fail to meet classroom expectations.  In an effort to achieve fairness and due process the THREE STRIKES POLICY will be implemented in Mr. Gigliotti’s classroom.  If a student fails to meet expectations their name will be recorded and the following consequences will be implemented:

STRIKE 1: The student will be issued a warning and a writing assignment.

STRIKE 2: The student must complete a writing assignment and wait 30 seconds

after the bell to be dismissed .

STRIKE 3: The student will be removed from class and sent to the office.

SEVERE CLAUSE: Violence, destruction of property, insubordination, and other serious offenses will be sent immediately to the office.

OTHER ACTIONS: Students who continue to distract the learning environment may face other classroom, house, or school consequences.
