Unit #1: The 13 English Colonies Geography Activity!
Learning Target: I can LOCATE  important locations found throughout the 13 English Colonies. 

Please complete the steps below to prepare for this assignment:

 Follow the directions below.  You will be creating a tab for this assignment after you have added this lesson's learning target to your LiveBinder.

1.  Open the "Learning Targets" tab in your LiveBinder.  Copy the learning target above into your LiveBinder.  Be sure to include today's date. 

2.  Create a new tab in your LiveBinder titled "The 13 English Colonies Geography Activity". 

3.  Now click on "content" > "text" > "text-media" option.

Part I: Locating The Original 13 English Colonies

1.  Type the following title into your LiveBinder text box: "Part I: Locating The Orginal 13 English Colonies"

2.  Why are we doing this activity?  Over the next several lessons we will be studying the Original 13 English Colonies that would eventually become the United States.   In order to understand how each of
     the colonies developed it is important to first be able to identify the location of each colony.  In this lesson you will be working on a few fun map activities to help you learn where each of the 13 colonies were
     located. 

3.  Conduct an Internet search to define the term: "Colony"  Write the definition in your Live Binder text box.

4.  Click to open the 13 Colonies Interactive Map Activity

5.  To help you label the 13 Colonies Interactive Map Activity you should also open the Original 13 English Colonies Map.

6.  When you have correctly labeled all 13 Colonies, move on to Part II of this activity to learn more about Colonial Regions.

Part II: 3 Colonial Regions


1.  Type the following title into your LiveBinder text box: "Part II: 3 Colonial Regions"

2.  The 13 colonies were divided into three distinct regions.  Conduct an Internet search to define the term: "region."  Write the definition in your Live Binder textbox.

3.  Open and examine the map of the 13 colonial regions

4.  Click on the region known as "New England".  List each of the 13 colonies that made up the "New England Region" in your Live Binder text box.

5.  Click on the region known as "The Middle Colonies".  List each of the 13 colonies that made up the "Middle Colonies Region" in your Live Binder text box.

6.  Click on the region known as "The Southern Colonies".  List each of the 13 colonies that made up the "Southern Colonies Region" in your Live Binder text box.

Part III: Creating Your Own Colonial Map

1.  Type the following title into your LiveBinder text box: "Part III: Creating Your Own Colonial Map"

2.  Open the MAPTIVATION website on your computer. 

3.  On the page, MAPTIVATION use the drop down window to select the "13 Colonies Map"

4.  Use the interactive tools the label the items on the map below.  If you need assistance with the tools, check out the video at the bottom of the screen.

     Complete the following on your 13 Colonies Map:

     A.  Color fill the "New England Colonies" Blue

     B.  Color fill the "Middle Colonies" Yellow

     C.  Color fill the "Southern Colonies" Red

     D.  Use the "Edit Key" option to create a key for your map that shows people the region each color represents

     E.  Use the "add text" feature to label each of the 13 colonies. 

5.  When you have completed the step above, click on "Save Map To Desktop."  Save your map using the following file name: lastname_13_colonies_map.  BE SURE TO SAVE BEFORE LEAVING THE SITE.

6.  Upload your completed map to your Live Binder media box.

 Part IV: Important Cities in The 13 Colonies

1.  Type the following title into your LiveBinder text box: "Part IV: Important Cities in the 13 Colonies"

2.  Open the 13 Colonies Interactive Map

3.  Use the 13 Colonies Interactive Map to click on each of the important colonial cities below. 

4.  For each of the cities below, list 3 facts you and your group learned while exploring this map in your Live Binder text box:

     A.  Williamsburg, Virginia

     B.  Philadelphia, Pennsylvania

     C.  Boston, Massachusetts

     D.  New York, New York

     E.  Charleston, South Carolina
