Unit #5: Madison's and Monroe's Administration - Causes of the War of 1812
Learning Target: I can EVALUATE President Madison's decision to ask Congress for a Declaration of War against England in 1812. 

Please complete the steps below to prepare for this assignment:

Today you will be starting a new Live Binder :-)  Follow the directions below.  You will also be creating a tab for your learning targets and a tab for this assignment. 
 
1.  Create a new binder in your LiveBinder account.  Name your binder: "James Madison's and James Monroe's Administrations."  Your description can read: "In this unit we will be studying the War of
    1812, The Era of Good Feelings, and the Industrial Revolution.
"  Hint: You may want to copy and paste this description into your Live Binder account. 

 2.  Next, create a "Learning Targets" tab in your new "James Madison's and James Monroe's Administrations" LiveBinder.  In your new tab, Now click on "content" > "text" to set up your Learning Targets
     page.  

 3.  Now, copy and paste the following learning target into your LiveBinder.  Be sure to include today's date. 

      Learning Target: I can EVALUATE President Madison's decision to ask Congress for a Declaration of War against England in 1812.

4.  Next, create a new tab in your LiveBinder titled "Causes of the War of 1812" for today's assignment. 

5.  Now click on "content" > "text" > "text-media" to set up your page.

Part I: Impressment

1.  Place the following title in your LiveBinder text box: "Part I: Impressment."

2.  Conduct an Internet search to find the definitions of the following terms: "economic warfare," "embargo," "impressment," and "Macon Bill No. 2."  Place the terms and definition in your LiveBinder
     text box. 

3.  Explore the information in box 7 of the materials to learn more about the major cause of the War of 1812 known as "impressment."

    


4.  Next, read the following passage explaining how American sailors were impressed by the Britisih Royal Navy prior to the War of 1812.


5.  Now using the information you learned about in the materials answer the questions below:

     A.  How did the conflict between England and France effect American trade with Europe?

     B.  Explain how American sailors were often "impressed" by the British Navy before the War of 1812.

     C.  Explain why the British Navy felt that the "impressment" of American sailors was legal.

Part II: Other Causes Of the War of 1812

1.  Place the following title in your LiveBinder text box: "Part II: Other Causes of the War of 1812"

2.  Conduct an Internet search to find the definitions of the following terms: "nationalism" and "War Hawks"  Place the terms and definition in your LiveBinder text box. 

3.  Next, explore the materials about the Causes of the War of 1812 in boxes 2-12 and in the reading about Impressment. 

    

4.  Make a list of at least 10 facts your learned about the Causes of the War of 1812 in your LiveBinder text box.

5.  Members of Congress who wanted war with England in 1812 were known as the "War Hawks."  Why do you think a bird like a "hawk" is used as an expression for someone who is in favor of war?  Place your
     answer in your LiveBinder text box.

Part III: Analyzing Primary Sources

1.  Place the following title in your LiveBinder text box: "Part III: Analyzing Primary Sources"

2.  Look at the "Impressment Poster" in box 9 of the materials.  You may also click on the thumbnail image below.  Imagine that you are walking down the street and you see this poster.  The poster includes a
     song about American sailors being impressed by the British Royal Navy.  

    

3.  Write a brief statement of 30 words or less explaining how seeing this poster might make the average American feel about the British impressment of American sailors before the War of 1812. 


4.   Now that you have learned about British Impressment of American sailors and other causes of the War of 1812, evaluate or judge President Madison's decision to ask Congress for a declaration of war against
      England in 1812.  In other words, do you think the issue of "impressment" was important enough for American to pick a fight with one of the worlds most powerful nation?  Explain your opinion in the form of a
      well written paragraph (7-9 sentences).  Be sure to use all of the facts you learned while completing this assignment.  

5.  Conduct an Internet search to find an image of an impressed American sailor.  Upload the image to your LiveBinder media box.
