Unit #1: Colonial Advertising Project
Learning Target: I can CREATE a digital advertisement encouraging settlers to move to one of the 13 English colonies. 

Please complete the steps below to prepare for this assignment:

 Follow the directions below.  You will be creating a tab for this assignment after you have added this lesson's learning target to your LiveBinder.

1.  Open the "Learning Targets" tab in your LiveBinder.  Copy the learning target above into your LiveBinder.  Be sure to include today's date. 

2.  Create a new tab in your LiveBinder titled "Colonial Advertising Project". 

3.  Now click on "content" > "text" > "text-media" option.

Part I: Colonial America Video Advertising Project! - Research Phase

1.  Congratulations!  You and your group have been hired by one of the original 13 English colonies to create a short video that will encourage more settlers to move to their colony.  Your job is to gather and
     learn about the colony that hired you and to produce a 30-60 second video advertisement.  Your video should be exciting.  It should give viewers information about your colony and encourage them to want to
     live there.  Use the steps and resources below to help you.  Good Luck.

2.  Type the following title into your LiveBinder text box: "Research About the Colony of _____________________" (Your teachers will assign you a specific colony)

3.  Explore the resources that go with your assigned colony to find the answers to the following questions.  You may want to divide these questions up within your group.  Place your answers in your LiveBinder
     text box. 

     A.  Who was the founder(s) of your colony?

     B.  What types of people settled in your colony?

     C.  What is the geography and climate like in your colony. 

     D.  What type of religion is found in your colony?

     E.  What is the economy like in your colony? 

     F.  What type of government does your colony have?

     G.  Why would someone from England (or other parts of Europe) want to move to your colony? 

     H.  Do an Internet search to find a map of your colony.  Save the map to your computer using the "control" > "click" option.

Part II: Colonial America Video Advertising Project! - Production Phase


1.  Type the following title into your LiveBinder text box: "Production Meeting"

2.  Now that you have found all of the information you need about your colony, assign each member one of the following roles in order to complete your video project.  List who is doing each part in your
     LiveBinder text box.

      - On Screen Talent (if any) - student or students that will appear in the video

      - Production staff - student or students who will "plan" the video.  The production staff will write the script and plan the video.  The video must include the above information.  It must also be interesting
        and appealing. 

      - Video Production - student or students who will film the video, find additional images for use in the video, and use iMovie to edit and produce the groups final project.

Part III: Colonial America Video Advertising Project! - Production Planning


1.  Type the following title into your LiveBinder text box: "Part III: Production Planning"

2.  The Production Staff should discuss how to put together the video.  They should brainstorm ideas for putting the video together in an interesting and entertaining matter.  Make notes of these ideas in your
     LiveBinder text box.    Videos can include a combination of shots of your on air talent and or images that can be found online and imported into iMovie.   You may also want to discuss the use of props and
     costumes for on air talent.  A nice mix of on air talent and images found on the Internet typically make for a great video!

3.  When you have come up with an idea for your video, the Production Staff should write a script for their on air talent to practice.  The script should include the answers to all of the questions above. 

4.  Your video production staff should use this time to find additional images online for use in the video.

Part IV: Colonial America Video Advertising Project! - Video Production

1.  Type the following title into your LiveBinder text box: "Part IV: Video Production"

2.  Now that you have planned your video, it is time for your on air talent to shine!  Your video production team should set up the set and record the on air talent performing the script.  Other members of the
     team can assist in this task with cue cards and set creation. 

3.  Once the video is recorded, the Video Production team should use iMovie to create the final video. 

4.  When you have finished, the Video Production team should email the members of your group and Mr. Gigliotti (gigliottip@parmacityschools.org) your final video file.

5.  The final video should be uploaded to the Video Production team's LiveBinder media box using the "content" > "upload" > "file"

      - Publisher - student or students who organize all of the information you gathered, keeps the group on task, and assists the other members of the team

      - Writers - student or students who summarize the information you learned about your colony and create a rough draft of your brochure and the text inside your brochure

      - LayOut Designer - student or students who will create the final computerized brochure using the MS Word Brochure Template and find online images for the project

Part III: Colonial America Brochure Advertising Project! - Production Planning

1.  Type the following title into your LiveBinder text box: "Part III: Production Planning"

2.  The Publisher and the Writers should discuss how to put together your group's brochure.  They should brainstorm ideas for putting the Brochure together in an interesting and entertaining matter.  Make
     notes of these ideas in your LiveBinder text box.    You may want to refer to the MS Word Brochure Template for layout ideas.  You will want to put together a rough draft.

3.  Next the writers should write a series of bullet points for each section of your brochure.   The bullet points should summarize all of the information about your colony you discovered during your research. 
    
These bullet points should be placed in your LiveBinder textbox. 

4.  During this time, your Lay Out Designer conduct Internet searches to find additional images and maps for your brochure.  They can also begin working on layout features such as Word Art titles , colors,
     styles, and fonts.  Be sure to begin by using the MS Word Brochure Template.  You can also design your own layout template if you are techy.  Be sure to save your brochure to your computer frequently.

Part IV: Colonial America Brochure Advertising Project! - Brochure Production

1.  Type the following title into your LiveBinder text box: "Part IV: Brochure Publication"

2.  Now that you have completed the draft phase of your brochure it is time for publication.   Your Lay Out Designer should be able to use the bullet points you drafted to complete your brochure.  Be sure to save
     your brochure to your computer frequently. 

3.  When you have finished, the Lay Out designer should email the members of your group and Mr. Gigliotti (gigliottip@parmacityschools.org) your final brochure.

4.  Each member of your group should upload your group's brochure to their LiveBinder media box using the "content" > "upload" > "file"

     about your colony and encourage settler to move there. Use the steps and resources below to help you.  Good Luck.

2.  Type the following title into your LiveBinder text box: "Research About the Colony of _____________________" (Your teachers will assign you a specific colony)

3.  Explore the resources that go with your assigned colony to find the following:  Place your answers in your LiveBinder text box. 

     A.  Make a list of 5 important facts you learned about you colony.  You may want to look for information about its founder, settlers, climate, economy, religion, and other facts.

     B.  Do an Internet search to find a map of your colony.  The best way to search is to use the following phase: "Map of colonial ____________" (name of colony)  Save the map to your computer.

     C.  Do an Internet search to find at least 5 pictures of your colony.   The best way to search for pictures is to search using the phrase "colonial ___________" (name of colony) Save the pictures to your
          computer.

3.  Next the writers should write a draft of each of your bullet points that will appear on your PowerPoint poster.   The bullet points should summarize all of the information about your colony you discovered
     during your research.  These bullet points should be placed in your LiveBinder textbox. 

4.  During this time, your Lay Out Designer should open PowerPoint and begin designing your poster.  They can create a lay out, color schemes, and import your maps and images based on your groups
     planning.  Feel free to examine the sample PowerPoint layout

Part IV: Colonial America Poster Advertising Project! - Brochure Production

1.  Type the following title into your LiveBinder text box: "Part IV: Poster Publication"

2.  Now that you have completed the draft phase of your poster it is time to put it all together.   Your Lay Out Designer should be able to use the bullet points you drafted, the map you found, and the images you
     downloaded to complete your PowerPoint slide poster.  Be sure to save your brochure to your computer frequently. 

3.  When you have finished, the Lay Out designer should email the members of your group and Mr. Gigliotti (gigliottip@parmacityschools.org) your final PowerPoint file.

4.  Each member of your group should upload your group's PowerPoint to their LiveBinder media box using the "content" > "upload" > "file"
