Unit #1: Democracy In The 13 Colonies
Learning Target: I can ANALYZE how democratic practices in Colonial America led to our modern American democracy. 

Please complete the steps below to prepare for this assignment:

 Follow the directions below.  You will be creating a tab for this assignment after you have added this lesson's learning target to your LiveBinder.

1.  Open the "Learning Targets" tab in your LiveBinder.  Copy the learning target above into your LiveBinder.  Be sure to include today's date. 

2.  Create a new tab in your LiveBinder titled "Democracy In The 13 Colonies". 

3. Now click on "content" > "text" > "text-media" option.

Part I: Defining Key Terms

1.  Type the following title into your LiveBinder text box: "Part I: Defining Key Terms"

2.  Conduct an Internet search to define the following terms: "democracy," "town meeting", "representative democracy", "House of Burgesses" and "legislature".  

3.  Write the definitions in your LiveBinder text box.

Part II: Examples of Democracy in the Colonies


1.  Type the following title into your LiveBinder text box: "Part II: Examples of Democracy in the Colonies"

2.  Next, examine the following information about democracy in the colonies with your group.  After you have read over the information, answer the following questions in your LiveBinder text box:

      A. What were two reasons why English colonies were created in America?  Think about what we have learned and list an example for each reason. 

      B. About how far were the 13 Colonies from their mother country of England?  How do you think England could still govern or control the Americans colonies from so far away?

      C.  The Colony of Virginia had one of the first examples of a representative democracy in America.  What was this legislative body called?

      D.  What was the purpose of New England Town Meetings?

      E.  Which colony did the Quakers create on the foundation of Religious Freedom?

3.  Explore the website in box #3 of the materials.  Carefully read the sections titled "Colonial Governments."

4.  Write a short well written paragraph (5-7 sentences) in your LiveBinder textbox explaining how most colonies were governed or ruled.  Be sure to include examples from the text.

2.  Conduct an Internet search to find an image of the "The House of Burgesses."  Save the image to your computer using the "control" > "click" > "save image function".  Now upload the image to your LiveBinder

3.  Next watch the short video about the House of Burgesses in box #10 of the materials.   

4.  Make a list of 8 facts you learned about the House of Burgesses in your LiveBinder textbox.  You should not include any review facts from the first 2 minutes of the video.

2.  Take a few minutes to explore boxes #5-8 in the materials  about New England Town meetings  with your group.  

3.  Imagine that you are planning to hold a town meeting right here in Parma, Ohio! Discuss with your group some important issues found in our community today. 

4.  Make a list of at least 5 issues you would like to have the community discuss and vote on during your Parma town meeting in your LiveBinder text box.
