Unit #7: Westward Expansion - Welcome to Your Wagon Group & to Westward Expansion
Learning Target: I can CREATE an advanced organizer to preview the materials associated with America's Westward Expansion.  

Please complete the steps below to prepare for this assignment:

 Today you will be starting a new binder :-)  Follow the directions below.  You will be creating a tab for your learning targets and a page for this assignment. 

 
1.  Create a new binder in your LiveBinder account.  Name your new binder: "Westward Expansion.Your description can read: "In this unit, we will become pioneers and will be traveling west on an amazing
      journey with our wagon group to fulfill America's Manifest Destiny!
 

 2.  Create a "Learning Targets" tab in your new LiveBinder.  Be sure to insert your text media option using the "content" > "text" option.  Copy the learning target above into your LiveBinder.  Be sure to include
      today's date. 

 3.  Create a new tab in your LiveBinder titled "Welcome To Your Wagon Group & Westward Expansion". 

 4.  Now click on "content" > "text" > "text-media" option.

Chore #1: Howdy!  Welcome to Your Wagon Group and to Our Westward Expansion Unit!
 
1.  Congratulations on your decision to sell all of your belongings and to travel west with your wagon group!  Your group is so excited that you have choosen to also serve as their wagon leader!  Being a Wagon
     Leader is a great responsibility! 

     It will be your responsibility to make sure that everyone in your wagon group survives the journey west by doing the following chores each day:

       - Giving and going over directions with the other members of your wagon group
 
       - Organizing daily activities along the trail

       - Making sure all members of your wagon group are on task and working on the chores

       - Helping to teach the other members in your wagon group about Westward Expansion

       - Ensuring that each member of your wagon group completes all of their work

       - Encouraging the other members of your wagon group to master the Westward Expansion materials so that you all survive your trip west


    Again thank you for volunteering for this important role!  Best of luck out there on the trail partner.  Don't be such a dude!  Learn about and teach westward expansion to survive your trip.  

2.  Take a moment to introduce yourself to the other members of your wagon group.  Give each of the other members of your wagon group a chance to introduce themselves as well.  You should begin each
     introduction with "Howdy Partner . . . "

3.  When you have completed your introductions, ask your group to open their LiveBinders and to copy down today's learning target:

 Chore #2: What To Know Before You Go? 

1.  Next, ask your wagon group to create and open a tab in their LiveBinder called "Introduction to Westward Expansion."  Be sure they followed the directions in the grey box above.   

2.  Before we pack up for our journey west, it is a great idea to find out what your fellow travelers already know and what they would like to know about America's Westward Expansion.  Ask your wagon group to
     type in two titles in their LiveBinder text box.  The first title will read "What do we already know about the west?" and the second title will read "What do we want to know about the west?"

3.  Now as wagon leader, lead a discussion within your wagon group to make a list of things you and your wagon group already know or want to know about the America's Westward Expansion.   It is up to the
     wagon leader to start the discussion and to make sure that each member is participating and contributing. 

4.  Have each member of your wagon group record the items discussed in their LiveBinder text box under the appropriate title. 

5.  Now choose one member of your wagon group to complete the "Wild West Card Activity" below in the blue box.

Chore #3: An Advanced Organizer To Help Plan Your Journey West!

1.  Now that you and your wagon group are comfortable, it is time to get the lay of the land.  Ask each member of your wagon group to download and open the United States Territorial Gains And Westward
     Expansion Advanced Organizer Map.  The file is in a PowerPoint format.  You and your group will be working on the next steps in PowerPoint and then uploading the completed file to the media box in your
     LiveBinder.

2.  As wagon leader, explain to your wagon group how the map of the United States has changed throughout our history.  In some ways our westward expansion is a bit like a puzzle.  Tell your wagon group that
     they will be using the text tool within PowerPoint to label each part of the Westward Expansion Map.  We will be going over each of these parts in the coming days.  Please stress to your wagon group that
     learning the name of each of these pieces on the map will be critical to your survival on the trail.  Use this map to help you label the map correctly. 

3.  Assist the members of your wagon group in labeling the map.  Be sure to check your answers.  We would not want any "problems" on the trail.  Have each member of your group save their labeled map
     frequently. Once completed as each member of your wagon group to upload the completed file to their LiveBinder.  To do so click on "content' > "upload" > "file" > "choose file" > "attach."

Chore #4: Express The West

1.  Yee Haa cow pokes, you have reached the final stop in this lesson!   As the wagon leader, ask your wagon group to make one final title in their LiveBinder text box labeled "How Did We Get _________?"

2.  Your teachers will be assigning each wagon group a piece of the Westward Expansion Puzzle.  These pieces include: Louisiana Purchase, Florida, Oregon Country, Texas Annexation, Mexican Cession, and the
     Gadsden Purchase.  If you teacher does not assign your group one of these pieces then hold a vote within your wagon group to pick your own. 

3.  Next, you and your wagon group should conduct your own Internet research to learn how your assigned piece became part of the United States.    You can also use these materials to help you. 

4.  As the wagon leader, assist your wagon group in finding important information and key facts.  You are looking to summarize how this piece of the puzzle became part of the United States. 

5.  Have each member of your wagon group write a paragraph in their LiveBinder text box explaining how this part of the map became part of the United States.

1.  Congratulations on your decision to sell all of your belongings and to travel west with your wagon group!  The American West offers an array of new opportunities for you!  In the west you can start of new life
     and even become rich!  However, a pioneer's trip out west can be extremely dangerous.  In order to survive the journey and begin a new life out west you will need to LISTEN TO AND FOLLOW THE
     DIRECTIONS
of your wagon leader.  Your wagon leader will be guiding your along the trail, explaining information, assigning you chores, and checking your work throughout this unit.  Without your wagon
     leader's guidance, you and your wagon group will encounter many "problems" on the trial.  These are the same problems that real pioneers faced and of which many did not survive. 

2.  Beyond your daily chores, your wagon leader may be looking for a volunteer to complete the "Wild West Wild Card Activity" in the blue box below.  These chores often need to get done in order for you to
     survive.  You can take turns completing these chores within your wagon group.  Your wagon leader may not do these extra chores.  For today, be sure that one of the members of your wagon group volunteers
     for this Wild West Wild Card Activity. 

3.  Be sure you have listed this lesson's learning target in your LiveBinder tab.

1.  Howdy!  There is a need along the trail for one member of your wagon group to complete an important chore!  One member of your group may volunteer and choose from the chores below.  If no one in your         wagon volunteers, the wagon leader may choose someone for this task.   Good Luck!

Chore #1: Conduct Internet research about the territory your wagon was assigned.  Share at least 3 facts you discover with your wagon group.  You must also share any pictures of the territory or its history that
                 you find on the web. 
  Ask the members of your wagon group to list these three facts in their Livebinder.

Chore #2
: Using a sheet of plain white paper, draw your own map of the territory your wagon group was assigned. Please color the map and label any important features.  Share your work with your group
                 when completed.  There are some maps within the American Nation that can assist you.  The map on page 379 will helpful.  Additional maps may be found in your textbook on pages 381, 386, 390,
                 395, and 400. 
You should also conduct your own Internet search.  Scan or photograph the map you drew and upload it to your LiveBinder.

Chore #3
: Using a sheet of poster paper, create an attractive poster illustrating the territory your wagon group was assigned which explains how it became part of the United States.  You should use markers to
                  create several bullet points and or maps of your territory.  You should conduct your own Internet research to gather ideas for your poster.  Scan or photograph your completed poster and upload it to
                  your LiveBinder.
