Unit #4: First Presidents - John Adams and Conflict With France
Learning Target: I can EVALUATE how John Adams handled the conflict with France after the XYZ Affair.  

Please complete the steps below to prepare for this assignment:

Follow the directions below.  You will be creating a tab for this assignment after you have added this lesson's learning target to your LiveBinder.

1.  Open the "Learning Targets" tab in your LiveBinder.  Copy the learning target above into your LiveBinder.  Be sure to include today's date. 

2.  Create a new tab in your LiveBinder titled "John Adams and Conflict With France". 

3.  Now click on "content" > "text" > "text-media" option.

Part I: John Adams Becomes President

1.  In your LiveBinder text box, place the following title "Part I: John Adams Becomes President"

2.  Have a look at the website going over the Election of 1796.  You should also explore the Miller website and the 270 To Win website additional information.  Answer the following questions below in your
     LiveBinder text box:

     A.  Who were the candidates running for president in 1796?

     B.  How many electoral votes did each candidate receive?

     C.  As a result of the election results, who became Vice President of the United States? 


3.  Watch the short video in box #2 of the materials.  Make a list of at least FIVE adjectives you think John Adams must have felt when he became our second president. 

4.  Conduct and Internet search to find an image of John Adams.  Upload your image to your LiveBinder media box.

3.  In your LiveBinder text box, make a list of at least 10 facts your learned about John Adams As President.

3.  Choose and explore the materials for this section in boxes 1-10.   Take you time carefully reviewing each resource.  List at least 10 facts in your LiveBinder text box.

     

4.  In your LiveBinder textbox, answer the following questions in the form of complete sentences:

     A.  How did President Adams deal with the French seizer of American Ships?

     B.  How did the French react to the arrival of the American negotiators? 

     C.  Why would have many Americans been upset or offended by the French reaction to our ambassadors?

     D.  Explain John Adams' decision not to go to war with France over the "XYZ Affair."


5.  Use what you have learned to write a well written paragraph (7-9 sentences) answering the following question below in your LiveBinder textbox:

    ** How well do you think John Adams handled the conflict with France following the XYZ affair?  In other words, do you believe he handled the situation correctly?  Use details and facts
