Unit #100: Using Your MacBook In Class: Setting Up Your Live Binder
Learning Target: I can CREATE a LiveBinder to showcase my Social Studies achievements.

Please complete the steps below to prepare for this assignment:

1.  In this area of each lesson you will find important directions needed to set up your LiveBinder for each activity. 

2.  For this practice lesson, you may want to download the How to Use LiveBinder Instructions.

Part I: Setting up your LiveBinder Account

1.  Open your web browser (Safari/Chrome/Firefox) > Go to: www.livebinders.com

2.  Next, click on the button that says "FREE-Sign UP"

3.  Now click "yes" to sign up with a teacher email.  Enter Mr. Gigliotti's email address gigliottip@parmacityschools.org

4.  In the "Password" box, type in the password Mr. Gigliotti gives you > Then click "Sign Up Now"

5.  **Important** Now please write down and email me your user name and password if you would like your work to be graded. gigliottip@parmacityschools.org

Part II:  Creating a Binder for Each Unit

1.  Now that you have your LiveBinder account, click "Start a Blank Binder"

2.  In the following form, enter the name of the unit's binder.  For today please name your binder "My First Binder." 

3.  Keep your binder personal.  Make your "access key" the same as the password you submitted above.

4.  Nice Job! You should have now created a binder within LiveBinder.  To access this binder in the future, login to your LiveBinder account, move the mouse over the binder you wish to edit, and then click "edit"

Part III: Practice Adding Content To Your Binder:

1.  At the top of your LiveBinder you will see a series of "tabs."  These tabs are similar to pages in your traditional binder.  You can click on these tabs to view content.  You can also name each tab by clicking on
     the text.  Practice naming your first tab "Learning Targets"

2.  Now let's add a text box to your "Learning Targets Tab" so that we can showcase our work and list our learning targets.  At the top of your LiveBinder page, click "Content" > "Text" > "1 Column Text."  This
     will set up a mini word processor within your live binder. 

     A.  In the top text box type in a title that reads "Learning Targets." 

     B.  In the second box, copy and paste or type this lessons learning target.  You can find it at the top of the lesson page.  Be sure to include today's date.

3.  Next press "save" to get out of the textbox.

Part IV: Setting Up An Activity In Your LiveBinder:

1.  In the next tab, edit the name of the tab to read "Practice Activity"

2.  At the top of this tab, you will see an area to "add a URL address".  This is where we will save each activity's lesson page within your binder. 

     - In the directions for each lesson, you will see a URL address to copy and paste into this box.
 
       For today, please copy and paste this URL address into the box: http://www.mrgigliotti.com/revamp%20January%202015_Live_Binder_Practice.htm 

       You should now see this page appear within your binder.  It will be a great way to always know what should be in your binder.

Part V: Creating A Sub Tab For Your Assignment:

1.  Now, click on the "sub tab" button at the top of the screen.  This will create a tab within the assignment tab for you to showcase your work.  You should name your sub tab: "My Assignment."

2.  Next within your "My Assignments" sub tab, create a text box media template by clicking "content" > "text" > "Text-Media"  This is template is where you will be completing your work.  This template will
     allow you to use the text box as a word processer .  The template will also allow you to upload pictures and documents as well. 

3.  In the top text box, title this assignment "Practice Assignment."

Part VI: Adding Images And Files To Your Live Binder:

1.  Next we are going to add an image to your Live Binder.  Do an Internet search for "map of European colonies in the Americas"  Examine the many images that will be displayed.  Save on of the images to
     your computer by doing the following: click on the image > view image > control + click > save image > desktop.

2.  Now upload your image by clicking on "content" > "upload" > and then finding the picture on your desktop.   This should place your map of European colonies in the America into your Live Binder.

Part VI: Exploring Resources and Adding Text

1.  Type the following title into your LiveBinder text box: "Part VI: 10 Facts About the Colony of Roanoke"

2.  Do an internet search to find the definition of the word "colony."  Now place the definition of the word "colony" into your Live Binder text box.

3.  Next explore the materials about the "Lost English Colony of Roanoke" to complete the assignment.  Take you time to look over all of the multimedia resources such as web pages, images, and videos. 

   

4.  After you have explored all of the resources, make a list of at least 10 facts that you learned about the Lost Colony of Roanoke in your Live Binder text box.

Part VII: The Columbian Exchange

1.  Type the following title into your LiveBinder text box: "Part VII: The Columbian Exchange"

2.  Do an Internet search to find the definition of the term "Columbian Exchange."  Now place the definition of the word "Columbian Exchange" in your Live Binder text box.

3.  Next, examine the image of the Columbian Exchange

4.  Make a list of at least 5 items that came to the New World from the Old World in your Live Binder text box.
