Unit #1: Slavery In The 13 Colonies
Learning Target: I can IMAGINE what the Middle Passage must have been like for enslaved Africans on their way to Colonial America. 

Please complete the steps below to prepare for this assignment:

 Follow the directions below.  You will be creating a tab for this assignment after you have added this lesson's learning target to your LiveBinder.

1.  Open the "Learning Targets" tab in your LiveBinder.  Copy the learning target above into your LiveBinder.  

2.  Create a new tab in your LiveBinder titled "Slavery In The 13 Colonies". 

3.  Now click on "content" > "text" > "text-media" option.

Part I: Why Were Slaves From Africa Used In The 13 Colonies?

1.  Type the following title into your LiveBinder text box: "Part I: Why Were Slaves From Africa Used In The 13 Colonies?"

2.  Take a few moments to watch the Introduction To Slavery Video

3.  Conduct an Internet search to define the following terms: Indentured Servant, Slave, labor.  Write the definitions in your LiveBinder text box. 

4.  Now that you have defined the terms, summarize the differences between indentured servants and slaves in a SINGLE SENTENCE.  You can write your sentence in your LiveBinder text box.

5.  Next, examine the information in the thumbnail below explaining the Reasons why African Slaves were used in Colonial America.

         

6.  Now based on what you learned, answer the following question in the form of a well written paragraph (7-9 sentences) in your LiveBinder text box:

     "Why do you think Africans were used as slaves in Colonial America?"

     A.  From which part of Africa did most of the enslaved Africans live? (North/South/East/West)

     B.  Which European nations participated in the slave trade?

     C.  Which nation imported the most slaves its colonies?

     D.  From which African nation were the most African slaves taken? 

     E.  From which modern day African nations were slaves taken to the New World?  Use a modern day map of Africa to help you.

Part III: The African Slave Trade


1.  Type the following title into your LiveBinder text box: "Part III: The Middle Passage"

2.  Conduct an Internet search to define the following term: "Middle Passage."  Write the definition in your LiveBinder text box. 

3.  Next watch the video showing what it would have been like for an enslaved African during the Middle Passage.  Please be aware that like slavery this video is very disturbing.  It accuratley depicts what it
     would have been like during the Middle Passage.  

    

4.  Discuss with your group what you saw happening in the video. 

5.  Imagine that you were an enslaved African traveling along the Middle Passage in a slave ship. 

6.  Make a list of at least 5 adjectives that might describe what enslaved Africans felt during this Middle Passage.
