Unit #5: Madison's and Monroe's Administration - The Industrial Revolution In America
Learning Target: I can ASSESS how the Industrial Revolution improved life in 19th century America.

Please complete the steps below to prepare for this assignment:

Follow the directions below.  You will be creating a tab for this assignment after you have added this lesson's learning target to your LiveBinder.
 
1.  Open the "Learning Targets" tab in your LiveBinder.  Copy the learning target above into your LiveBinder.  Be sure to include today's date. 

2.  Next, create a new tab in your LiveBinder titled "The Industrial Revolution in America" for this assignment. 

3.  Now click on "Content" > "Text" > "Text Media" option

 Part I: What Was The Industrial Revolution?  

1.  Place the following title in your LiveBinder text box: "Part I: What was the Industrial Revolution?"

2.  Explore the resources about the Industrial Revolution in boxes 24-27 of the materials.  You should also read the passage about the Industrial Revolution.  
     You might also want to watch this video about the Industrial Revolution to learn even more. 

    

3.  Make a list of at least 10 facts you learned about the Industrial Revolution in your LiveBinder text box. 

4.  Discuss what you have discovered with your group.  Write your own definition of the historical phrase "The Industrial Revolution" in your LiveBinder text box.  Your definition should describe the
     changes in manufacturing that took place during this time period.

 Part II: Who Was Samuel Slater?

1.  Place the following title in your LiveBinder text box: "Part II: Who wa Sam Slater?"

2.  Explore the resources in boxes 28 and 29 of the materials about Samuel Slater.  You may also wish to do your own Internet research about the life of Samuel Slater. 

3.  Make a list of at least 5 facts about Samuel Slater in your LiveBinder text box.

4.  In your LiveBinder text box, use what you have learned about Samuel Slater to compose a well written paragraph (7-9 sentences) answering the following questions:

     Compare the accomplishments of Samuel Slater to that of other American innovators such as: Thomas Edison, Henry Ford, Steve Jobs, and Mark Zuckerburg.  You may wish to choose
     one of these other innovators and do some brief research to assist you.

 Part III: America's First Factories & The Lowell Girls

1.  Place the following title in your LiveBinder text box: "Part III: America's First Factories and the Lowell Girls." 

2.  Watch the video about America's first factories known as the Lowell Mills in box 30 of the materials.

3.  While you are enjoying the video, answer the questions posted on the screen.  You will want to copy the question and type your answer into your LiveBinder text box.  The
     easiest way to be successful on this part of the activity is to pause the video so that you can add questions and answers to your LiveBinder as you go through the information. 

4.  Now that you have learned about the Industrial Revolution and the Lowell Girls, you will be writing a letter that includes all you have learned.  Imagine that you are a Lowell Girl trying to convince your parents to
     let you go to work in the textile mills.  Write your parents a well written letter explaining why a young lady would have wanted to work at the Lowell Mills in the early 1800's.  Be sure to include at least 3
     reasons you learned about in the materials.  To help you write your letter, please explore the materials in boxes 31-33 to learn more about the Lowell Girl's experience. 

5.  Do an Internet search to find a picture of the Lowell Girls at work in the text tile mills.  Save the image to your computer.  Upload the image into your Live Binder media box.

Part IV: Improvements in Transportation during the early 1800's

1.  Place the following title in your LiveBinder text box: "Part IV: Improvements in Transportation During the early 1800's"

2.  Watch the video in box 17 of the materials about the building of the Erie Canal. 

3.  Make a list of at least 10 facts you learned about the Erie Canal. 

4.  Next click here to learn more about the positive and negative effects of a canal.  Make a list of TWO positive effects and TWO negative effects of building canals.

3.  Choose and make a list of 5 inventions you read about in your Live Binder text box.
