Unit #4: First Presidents - The Election of 1800 & Jeffersonian Democracy
Learning Target: I can COMPARE Jefferson's presidential style to Washington's and Adams' styles.

Please complete the steps below to prepare for this assignment:

 Follow the directions below.  You will be creating a tab for this assignment after you have added this lesson's learning target to your LiveBinder.

1.  Open the "Learning Targets" tab in your LiveBinder.  Copy the learning target above into your LiveBinder.  Be sure to include today's date. 

2.  Create a new tab in your LiveBinder titled "The Election of 1800 & Jeffersonian Democracy". 

3.  Now click on "content" > "text" > "text-media" option.

Part I: The Election of 1800

1.  In your LiveBinder text box place the following title for this section: "Part I: The Election of 1800."

2.  Take your time to explore the materials found in boxes 1-6 about the Election of 1800 and the 12th Amendment. 

  

3.  After looking over the materials, answer the following questions about the results of the Election of 1800 in your LiveBinder text box:

    A.  Who were the candidates running for president in 1800? 

    B.  To which political party did each candidate running for president in 1800 belong?

    C.  How many electoral votes did each candidate recieve?



4.  Next, use the information above to create your own graph using the ChartGo webpage using the results of the Election of 1800.  If you need help using the ChartGo website, check out this short video tutorial.

5.  Save your Election of 1800 chart to your computer.  Upload the chart to your LiveBinder media box. 


6.  Now, answer the questions about the Election of 1800 below in your LiveBinder text box:

     A.  What was the result of the electoral vote in the Election of 1800?

     B.  According to the Constitution, if no candidate receives a majority of the electoral vote, or if there is a tie, how is the election decided.  

     C.  What role did Alexander Hamilton play in the election of Thomas Jefferson in 1800?


7.  Next, explore the material found in box 12 about the 12th Amendment to the United States Constitution.  In your LiveBinder text box, answer the following questions:

     A.  Why do you think it was a bad idea to have the candidate who finished in second place become the Vice President?

Part 1: Everything You Always Wanted To Know About Thomas Jefferson The Man!

 
1.  Place a title for this section in your LiveBinder text box that reads "Part I: Everything You Always Wanted To Know About Thomas Jefferson The Man!

 
2. Conduct your own Internet search to find an image of Thomas Jefferson as out third President.   Save the image to your computer using the control + click function.  Upload the image to your LiveBinder media
     box.  

3.  Thomas Jefferson is the most famous and important American to have ever lived!  Even today, nearly every American, is able to identify Thomas Jefferson and even recall some of his many contributions to our
     nation.   However, beyond Thomas Jefferson's contribution to the birth of our nation, was an extraordinary man.  In this section we will be conducting some research in order to learn more about Thomas
     Jefferson "the man" in order to better understand his place in our nation's history.
