Unit #4: First Presidents - The Louisiana Purchase and Lewis and Clark

Please complete the steps below to prepare for this assignment:

 Follow the directions below.  You will be creating a tab for this assignment after you have added this lesson's learning target to your LiveBinder.

1.  Open the "Learning Targets" tab in your LiveBinder.  Copy the learning target above into your LiveBinder.  Be sure to include today's date. 

2.  Create a new tab in your LiveBinder titled "The Louisiana Purchase and Lewis and Clark". 

3.  Now click on "content" > "text" > "text-media" option.

Part I: The Louisiana Purchase

1.  In your LiveBinder text box place the following title for this section: "Part I: The Louisiana Purchase"

2.  Conduct an Internet search to define the following terms: "Pinckney Treaty," "Louisiana Purchase," and "Constitutional"   Type the terms and the definitions in your LiveBinder text box.

3.  Explore the materials found in boxes 12 & 13 about Thomas Jefferson and the Louisiana Purchase.  Make a list of at least 10 facts about Thomas Jefferson and the Louisiana Purchase.  Focus on the who,
     what, where, when
facts within the materials.  They will help you write your paragraph below. 

    

3.  In your LiveBinder text box, use your facts above about the Louisiana Purchase and Thomas Jefferson to write a well written paragraph (7-9 sentences) explaining how the United States was able to purchase
     the Louisiana Territory.  Be sure to include all important facts, people, and details of the event in your paragraph.

2.  Conduct an Internet search to define the following term: "continental divide."  Type the term and the definition in your LiveBinder text box.

3.  Now click on the map of the Louisiana Purchase, make a list of ALL of the states that can be found today in what was the Louisiana Purchase. Click here to see a political map of the United States today. 

4.  Conduct an Internet search to find an image of the Louisiana Purchase.  Upload the image to your LiveBinder Media box.

 Part III: Lewis and Clark's Corps of Discovery

1.  In your LiveBinder text box place the following title for this section: "Part III: Lewis and Clark's Corps of Discovery"

2.  Conduct an Internet search to define the following terms: "expedition," "Corps of Discovery," "keel boat," "pirogue," and "Sakakawea."
     Type the terms and the definitions in your LiveBinder text box.

3.  Next explore the materials found in boxes 14-20 about Lewis and Clark and the Corps of Discovery.  Make a list of at least 10 facts about the Lewis and Clark Expedition 

    

4.  When studying history, it is always important to review primary sources. Lewis and Clark kept very detailed journal entries during their expedition.  Click here to see one of their entries.  Click here to read a text
     version of their journals.  Choose one journal entry from the Lewis and Clark expedition to explore.  Answer the questions below in your LiveBinder textbox:

     1.  What was the date of the journal entry you choose?

     2.  Where was the Corp of Discovery located when writing this journal entry?

     3.  In a few sentences, explain what the Corp of Discovery was exploring, learning, or doing on this day? 

     4.  What challeneges did the Corp of Discovery face during this journal entry?

     5.  What did the Corp of Discovery "discover" during this entry?

 Part IV: Take Command of Lewis and Clark's Corps of Discovery


1.  In your LiveBinder text box place the following title for this section: "Part IV: Take Command of Lewis and Clark's Corps of Discovery"

2.  Now click on the PBS website "Into the Unknown.".  Do your own exploration of these resources about the Lewis and Clark Expedition.  When you are finished, click on the link for
    "Into the Unknown."  This website will allow you to take command of Lewis and Clarks Corps of Discovery!  Read the prompts carefully and make the best choices to save your men and yourself.  Follow along
    to see if  you have what it takes to be Lewis and Clark. 

3.  Now that you have completed your expedition, write at least three journal entries of your own that describe the challenges and choices Lewis and Clark faced while leading the Corp of Discovery.  Just like
     Lewis and Clark, you shoudl note your dates, locations, challeneges, and discoveries in each entry.  Each journal entry should be in the form of a well written paragraph (7-9 sentences) and placed in your
     LveBinder text box.

4.  Send Ms. Foster (fostern@parmacityschools.org), another teacher here at Parma High, an email with at least THREE facts you learned about Lewis and Clark.
