Unit #5: Nationalist Revolutions: Nationalist Revolutions Sweep the West

I CAN: -Identify how the ideals of the Enlightenment and aims of the American and French Revolutions inspired revolutions in Latin America.

I KNOW I HAVE IT WHEN: - I can identify specific Enlightenment ideals that encouraged the peoples of Latin America to fight for their independence. - I can make connections between the aims of the American, French and Latin American revolutions.

I AM LEARNING THIS BECAUSE: - I need to understand how revolutions lead to a new sense of nationalism among countries in the 19th century.

Part 1: Nationalist Revolutions Sweep the West From Latin America to Europe Research!


 1. Nationalism, or the belief that people’s loyalty should not be to a king or or an empire but to a nation of people who share a common culture and history was a powerful idea during the 1800s!  Across the globe
     from Latin America to Europe, nationalistic movements and revolutions created new nations and broke up old empires.  In this activity, we will be researching, presenting, and learning about some of the most
     famous nationalistic revolutions in both Latin America and in Europe.  

     Follow the directions below to complete the assignment:

 2. Each student will be working collaboratively to research and present ONE element of the 19th Century Nationalistic Revolutions.  Take a moment to choose TWO other students to work with on this project. 
     Be sure to choose wisely.  Your teachers may also assign you a group. 

    Each of your groups will be assigned a different element of the 19th Century Nationalistic Revolutions below:

3.  Have one member of your group create a Google slides and share it with the rest of the group.  Each member of the group should contribute to the presentation.  Each member of your group needs to
      collaborate on the presentation and understand the information within your presentation.  You will each be presenting this information to other students.

4 .  Now, as a group, conduct your own research on your assigned element of the 19th Century Nationalistic Revolutions: 

  ****  Begin by using your text book to find the information below.  Once you have a basic understanding of your element of your 19th Century Nationalistic Revolution, conduct your own Internet research to enhance your presentation.  You should use a minimum of two additional websites beyond the information in your text.    ****DO NOT COPY & PASTE!****  
 


A.  Title slide: Which of the above elements of the 19th Century Nationalistic Revolutions was your group assigned?

B.  What year(s) did your group's element of the 19th Century Nationalistic Revolutions take place?

C.  Who were the most famous people or groups involved in your element of the 19th Century Nationalistic Revolutions?

D.  How was the nation(s) governed before their nationalistic revolution?

E.  What was the final outcome of the your element of the 19th Century Nationalistic Revolutions?

F.  Include at least ONE primary source from your element of the 19th Century Nationalistic Revolutions?

G.  Compose a well written summary of your group's element of the 19th Century Nationalistic Revolutions? (Paragraph)

H.  Be sure to include a map and at least 3 images associated with your element of the 19th Century Nationalistic Revolutions?

5.  Take some time to each practice going over your presentation with the other members of your group.   You will EACH be presenting this information to the members of the other groups.  The more you practice
     the better you will do when you present to others. 


Part 2: Group Presentations


 1.  Please come to class to take attendance.  We will then be heading down to the Media Center. 
 
 2.  Sit at one of the 6 presentation tables with people from OTHER GROUPS.  In other words, you should not be sitting with anyone you worked with on this activity. 

 3.  Download the Nationalistic Revolutions Sweep the West Study Guide.  Open the worksheet in Google Docs.  Be sure to click on file > Save As > Google Doc

 4.  Now each person at your presentation table will present their group's element of 19th Century Nationalistic Revolutions to the others at the table.  Be sure to use appropriate presentation skills (speaking to
      audience & being audible).   Plug your Chromebook into the TV at the station.  Just speak to your classmates about what you learned. 
      Your grade for this assignment will be based on your presentation.


 5.  While others are presenting, please give them attention and respect.  As you listen to other student's presentations, complete the Nationalistic Revolutions Sweep the West Study Guide..
